Yesterday as I was waiting to check in for my yoga class, I over heard two woman talking about how fit our yoga instructor was looking. They wanted to know EXACTLY what she was doing to get so fit.  After she listed off all the things she did, they dreamily looked at her and said “I want a body like yours”.

This interaction really irritated me. It irritated me for several reasons.

First, when it comes to health we are ALWAYS looking for the magic recipe. We see a friend go to Weight Watchers and lose thirty pounds, so we rush off to Weight Watchers only to find we don’t get the same result.

A friend tells us that they were having trouble sleeping at night and took melatonin, so we rush off and take melatonin and notice nothing. Or a friend gets off wheat and their whole world changes. You get off wheat and only to feel deprived.

Or worse yet, a friend decides to run a half marathon and gets in amazing shape, so you decide to do the same and get injuried.

I have BIG NEWS for you. Health doesn’t work like that. There is no one size fits all approach that will work. This is why we customize people’s health plans in my office. One person might need to work on their microbiome of their gut to get their health back, while another person is loaded with toxins and needs a deep detoxing.

The second reason this interaction irritated me, is it leaves people feeling frustrated and hopeless. When you try out a health trick that worked for a friend and get no result, you often give up. You start telling yourself that you are aging or it’s your genetics. You start to feel you are doomed to be this way for life.

Nothing could be further from the truth! EVERY body is designed to heal. As you read this email, your body is killing cancer cells. You are a true miracle.

If you are frustrated with your health, upset with how it is feeling and functioning, you have to address four areas of your body:

1. Brain & Nervous
2. Gut
3. Liver
4. Hormones

Too often people try to repair one system without looking at the others systems. These systems are exactly what we work with in my office. If you are not getting results with your current health plan, you are most likely not addressing all four systems.

So the next time you hear a friend talk about a great new weight loss plan that is working for them, be happy for them, but know that your path may be different.
